bartaco x Fair Harbor

bartaco x Fair Harbor

bartaco announced a partnership with sustainable retail brand Fair Harbor, which creates unique swimwear pieces from recycled plastic bottles. The first collaboration launched in 2021, selling out in just a matter of hours. Encouraged by bartaco guest reactions to the sustainable offering, the company extended its partnership and relaunched another swimwear collaboration this past May. Sustainable partnerships remain a large part of the company’s strategy, and the company is seeking out additional brands that share the same values and ethos that bartaco has established.

Reclaimed Design

Reclaimed Design

bartaco's design and decor features mostly reclaimed wood. This shows up predominantly in two areas: Reclaimed wood frames: sourced from old barns and repurposed as design & decor in each bartaco location. Reclaimed wall wood: all wall wood is reclaimed from old barns, houses, bowling alleys, etc. – we clean it up and either paint it, or leave it natural to bring warmth to the space. Furniture & bookcases are sourced from antiques where possible, and in other cases (bookcases, shelves, bar top, table tops) are all fabricated from reclaimed wood. We also use washable burlap in restroom garbage pails to avoid plastic where possible.

Remote Working

Remote Working

Remote working can be beneficial to businesses and employees alike. Having a remote workforce reduces travel time and emissions from daily commuting as well as reduces the need for larger office spaces that require energy to maintain. Working from home also can reduce waste and costs associated with building office supplies such as paper, ink, and single-use utensils while also minimizing general waste generation.

LED Lights

LED Lights

bartaco uses energy efficient LED lighting served in reclaimed containers made from wood troughs, and baskets. LED lights are highly energy-efficient, and have the potential to fundamentally change the future of lighting in the United States. Residential LEDs -- especially Energy Star rated products -- use at least 75% less energy, and last up to 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting.

Sustainable To-Go Program

Sustainable To-Go Program

bartaco has implemented a program to reduce its waste by taking a deeper dive into their takeout business. There are five main initiatives here: Compostable to-go containers made from biodegradable natural sugarcane, as well as PLA lids made from NatureWorks Ingeo™ PLA compostable plastic derived from corn grown in the USA and composts in 2-4 months in a commercial facility 100% recyclable to-go bags which are produced from reused/recycled paper material sourced from various paper mills across the USA Tongs made from bamboo, which is considered extremely renewable and sustainable since it is very fast growing. once bamboo is harvested, it only takes 3-5 years for a new bamboo stalk to reach full height, compared to trees, which can take 20+ years to reach full height. To-go salad bowls made from molded fiber pulp compostable bases with recyclable plastic lids bartaco's takeout chip bags uses paper sourced from certified sustainable forests in addition to recycled materials which are recyclable and biodegradable

Navien Tankless Water Heaters

Navien Tankless Water Heaters

Navien condensing stainless steel heat exchangers recover extra heat that would be lost in non-condensing boilers. The result is a reduction in energy consumption, lower CO2 emissions and low exhaust temperatures allowing the use of less expensive venting materials such as Schedule 40 PVC.

Refrigerant Reclamation Project

Hudson Technologies is working to reduce the overall environmental impact refrigerants have on our world by reclaiming and reusing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) - the most commonly used refrigerant and a powerful greenhouse gas when released into the atmosphere. Hudson processes used refrigerants to remove oil and water so that they meet specifications for new refrigerant gas, and once restored, they are used in the maintenance of existing and newly manufactured products. By reclaiming, recertifying, and reusing refrigerants - 400,000 lbs to date - this project is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste, and promoting a more sustainable means of HFC use and management.

Kootznoowoo Forestry Project

The Kootznoowoo Project protects 20,159 acres of forest located on the Dolomi and Dora Bay stretches of Prince of Wales Island in Alaska. 8,000 acres of this project are classified as an old-growth forest - forests with large, old (alive and dead) trees that are virtually undisturbed by human impact. These forests serve as an ecological staple to local animals and nearby communities. This project is unique because it is owned by the native Haida and Tlingit people, who have inhabited this land for over 1,000 years, and managed alongside the United States Forest Service. This joint protection responsibility ensures that indigenous territories are protected and natives voices are heard. This land is home to twelve fish bearing streams and is saturated with various types of berry bushes that are historically significant in the Dolomi and Dora Bay.

Paradigm Cookstoves Project

Launched in 2008, The Paradigm Project is a social enterprise providing products, services and opportunities that address basic human needs in the poorest markets of Africa. In Kenya, Paradigm created EzyLife - a company that distributes locally-appropriate, energy efficient cooking technologies to address the financial and environmental problems arising from open fire cooking and traditional stoves used in poor communities. The local jobs that have been created as a result of this project provide lasting benefits including reduced consumption of natural resources and positive impacts for women and girls. Paradigm became one of the first verified projects in the world in 2019 when its social outcomes were verified by an independent agency. Verifications have counted nearly 300,000 people positively impacted by the program, 6.2 million hours and over $3 million dollars in firewood costs saved.

Grid Connected Solar Project

Centered in the Charanka Village in the state of Gujarat, this solar grid project is the first of its kind for India. The solar plant produces 25 megawatts (MW) of electricity and is connected to the Indian electricity grid - meaning the country is diversifying its energy sources and creating a more resilient grid. Through the use of power purchase agreements, nearby residents and workplaces can choose to have their energy sourced from this sustainable energy solution.

Salto Pilão Hydropower Plant Project

The Salto Pilão project consists of the construction of a hydropower plant which has a power generation capacity of 191.8 megawatts, meaning the plant can supply power for around 190,000 homes. This hydropower plant calls the Southern region of Brazil home, located between the cities of Lontras, Ibirama and Apiúna, in the state of Santa Catarina. The hydropower plant uses turbines to generate renewable energy for the National Interconnected Grid, creating a more resilient electrical grid, expanding energy sources for Brazil’s future.
